Has anyone tried an AI phone receptionist for a small business? - codeoravision - 10-04-2026

Hello, everyone.

I’ve been looking into AI phone receptionist for small business use cases, especially for businesses that receive a lot of calls but don’t necessarily need someone answering the phone full-time.

What interests me is whether an AI receptionist can actually handle the everyday tasks reliably, such as:
  • Answering calls after business hours
  • Handling common customer questions
  • Taking messages
  • Scheduling or confirming appointments
  • Transferring important calls to the right person
  • Capturing basic customer information

I can see the appeal for small businesses because missed calls can easily turn into missed leads, but I’m wondering how well these systems work in real-world situations.

For those who have tried one, how was the experience? Did customers notice they were speaking with an AI, and were there any issues with understanding different accents or handling unexpected questions?

I’d especially be interested in hearing from people using one for home services, healthcare, legal, dental, or other appointment-based businesses.
